Weekly Events July 29 - August 4

Written by Jim Ziegler In an infinite multiverse with infinite possibilities, every possible event must occur, and every possible world must exist. The multiverse of Magic: The Gathering has never had defined limits, and it could well be limitless. Throughout the multiverse we’ve seen countless worlds with different resources, races, and laws of physics far outside of what we could ever experience in reality, from floating islands to aether flowing through the air itself. We’ve seen planes without humans before, but never before Bloomburrow have we encountered a plane that warps visitors to match itself. When Urza and Gerrard traveled to Phyrexia, they didn’t become cyborgs. Nor did Angrath or Quintorius become human when they traveled to Ixilan, a plane without Loxodon or Minotaurs. So what makes Bloomburrow different?   It’s already been confirmed that the creatures of Bloomburrow are the same sizes as their extraplanar counterparts: Mice are mouse-sized, raccoons are raccoon-sized, bears, wolves, and moose are their normal size, and enormous compared to the denizens of Valley. But when Ral, Jace, and Vraska visited the plane they all arrived as small anthropomorphic animals: An otter, a fox, and a lizard. It makes sense from a story perspective, because a human or gorgon arriving in a world where they could accidentally step on most of the population would be problematic. And the strength of Ral’s lightning seems to be linked to his size, otherwise he would have incinerated the dragonhawk, which presumably arrived in Bloomburrow via an Omenpath and was “animal-shifted” to match the environment, which answers the question about Planeswalkers arriving to Bloomburrow normalls, being animal-shifted, and leaving via omenpaths. Sorry, furries, they won’t stay adorable when they return to Ravnica.   The unanswered question is what happens to residents of Bloomburrow when they leave via Omenpath? Would they all become human, or something closer to their normal selves? Would Gev be a Viashino, Finneas a Moonfolk, and Zoraline a bat?   Mark Rosewater recently referenced “future Bloomburrow Commander decks,” which hints at the possibility of returning to Magic’s comfiest plane sometime in the future. Maybe then we’ll get the answer. Until then, there are finally enough rabbits, otters, and Mice for proper kindred decks!   GATHER FOR MAGIC Bloomburrow Release Draft Friday, 6:00 PM The tails are tiny, but the adventures are big in Bloomburrow, Magic’s newest set. April 29 - May 5

Written by Jim Ziegler Can you believe that Dungeons & Dragons has been around for fifty years?   D&D originated as a fantasy playstyle based off of an older wargame called Chainmail. It would be a bit like Warhammer players deciding that rather than conduct an all-out war, they wanted to focus on their favorite units in some kind of smaller, squad-sized mission. But D&D took off, far beyond Gary Gygax’s wildest expectations.   In 2024, we’re up to 5th Edition, which is more like 7th edition, but nobody counts The White Box or 3.5. Each addition brings big changes to make the game more fun and inviting to both new and returning players, but with each new set of rules things are left behind. Using a ruler to measure the distance between figures was probably a good thing to lose, but what about the dozens of monsters, classes, and races left behind? What if players start to grow bored of the standard five Chromatic Dragons and want to test their mettle against less familiar yellow, orange, or mauve dragons?    I recently wrote a guide on updating 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons to 5th Edition, allowing any Dungeon Master to dig through the deepest part of the back catalog to find monsters that their players won’t find in the Monster Manual. In the process I updated one of my favorite creatures, the aforementioned Mauve Dragon, created by Nebula Award-winning artist Phil Foglio for Dragon Magazine. The full stat block is included below for your own use, but try not to be too obnoxious when you first lead it into your players’ camp with a terrifying “growf?”. Descent Into The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth D&D 50th Anniversary Celebration Event Sunday, May 5th, 1:00 PM Deep in the Yatil Mountains lie the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, formerly occupied by the legendary archmage Iggwilv the Witch Queen. Though Iggwilv is long gone, she is rumored to have amassed a magical hoard of unsurpassed value, a trove of such fame that scores of adventurers have perished in search of it. Bring a 9th-level character ready to play! All participants earn a special D&D dice bag and other goodies. Entry: $10 ($5 for monthly members). Pre-registration is recommended.   Children’s Day Pokémon Celebration Sunday, May 5th, 1:00 PM Gam3Escape will be hosting a special Pokemon BINGO for children's day. Crack a pack, pick the best card, and pass it on. Build a deck with the cards you draft and compete for packs and promos. Entry fee: $25   Standard Showdown Saturday, 3:00 PM It's boots and chaps, it's cowboy hats. It's spurs and latigo. It's the ropes and the reins, and the joy and the pain and they call the thing Standard Showdown! Bring your best deck, and battle it out for fun and prizes. Stick around afterwards for OTJ Open House and Commander! Entry fee: $7.   Casual Commander Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 6:00 PM.
