Freed from the Great Illuminary during the events of Rise of the Floodborn, Ursula has been gathering strength to get her revenge for the injustices inflicted upon her. But why does she feel so slighted?

In the original script for Disney’s 1989 classic The Little Mermaid, Ursula was written as King Triton’s younger sister, making her Ariel’s aunt and giving her a legitimate claim to the throne, as long as Triton didn’t produce any heirs. If this sounds like a familiar story, you’re right! Walt Disney Studios would revisit the same idea five years later with Scar in the Lion King.

The royal families of Disney kingdoms don’t seem to be very nice if you’re the second child: Ursula was banished, by some accounts, simply for being ugly, as if the fact that she was half octopus instead of half fish was her fault. Scar, meanwhile, goes by his nickname because his family named him Taka, Swahili for “trash.” I’m sure we’d all have a bone to pick if our parents disowned us for being born with a disability or named us after garbage.
