Written by Jim Ziegler September is a good month for Cinderace fans: The Max Out season in Pokémon GO finally introduces the Galarian partner Pokémon , giving players a chance to catch Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. Meanwhile, the Stellar Crown Pokémon TCG set introduces Cinderace ex, which players are already testing with the expectation that it will be a major player in high-level tournaments. With the new season of Pokémon GO, you’ll notice an overwhelming amount of Galarian Pokémon in the wild, along with a new feature on the map: Power Spots. Power Spots function similarly to Poké Stops, but players can visit them for Max Particles instead of items. They also only exist for a short time before spawning in another location, so make sure to grab your Max Particles while you can. There’s a daily limit of 800 Max Particles that you can collect, and a 1000 Max Particle limit that you can carry. The only way to use them now is to upgrade a Dynamax Pokemon’s Max Moves, which also costs Stardust and candy. Since Wooloo and Skwovet are the only Dynamax Pokémon currently available, that means you’ll need to keep catching them in order to clear your Max Particle inventory enough to finish the associated Special Research. While Pokémon GO players are discouraged by the cost of upgrading their Dynamax Pokémon, Pokémon TCG players are excited by the new Cinderace ex. This fire Pokémon has two great attacks: Flare Strike, which does 280 damage but can’t be used two turns in a row, and Garnet Volley, which deals 180 damage to any of your opponent’s Pokémon. Both attacks require three energy, but Garnet Volley needs fire, fighting, and darkness energy. One of the best parts of Cinderace ex is that it has no retreat cost, allowing it to pivot after using Flare Strike to allow another Pokémon to attack. If you manage to equip enough energy to two Cinderace exs, that means they can form a relay team to swing for 280 each turn! Cinderace ex and the rest of Stellar Crown won’t be legal at this weekend’s League Challenge or League Cup, but Gam3Escape is hosting a Pokémon GO Scavenger Hunt for the month. Written by Jim Ziegler Pokémon GO is a great way to get out and get active with your favorite Pokémon. As you walk around town you’ll discover and catch new Pokémon, visit important cultural sites, and build a deep bond with your buddy Pokémon. Released in 2016, Pokemon Go took the world by storm and inspired Pokémon fans and hardcore gamers alike to go outside and touch grass. Eight years later trainers continue to explore, coerced to exercise by the promise of rare Pokémon hatching from their eggs if they just walk far enough. When the game first released players and pundits joked that Nintendo was trying to turn couch potatoes into fitness fanatics. But how fit could you actually get just walking? You need more than just exercise to get fit, after all. Enter Pokémon Sleep. Released in the summer of 2023, Pokémon Sleep is a sleep-tracking app that rewards you for getting to bed on time and getting a full night’s sleep. Each week you take care of a new Snorlax that you feed and care for with the help of the Pokémon you befriend after finding them asleep in your camp each morning. The better and more consistent your sleep, the stronger and rarer the Pokémon that show up in your camp. The game was even released in conjunction with an accessory, the Pokémon GO Plus +, which pairs with both Pokémon Sleep as a more accurate sleep tracker and with Pokémon GO as a hands-free, automatic Pokémon catcher. Through this device, each game also rewards you for playing the other game: Your buddy will get extra hearts in Pokémon GO if you slept well the previous night, and you’ll get more berries to feed your Snorlax if you hit more Poké Stops. It seems like Nintendo is trying to make sure that their fans are healthy and fit, even going so far as to release Pokémon Smile, an app to help young trainers brush their teeth. Surely the reason for all of these health and fitness apps is to keep their customers healthy enough to keep buying their product, but it leave the question: When will Pokémon Kitchen be released? Written by Jim ZieglerWhen Kazuki Takahashi first began writing Yu-Gi-Oh, he never imagined it would become one of the “Big Three” trading card games, along with Pokémon and its inspiration, Magic: The Gathering. In fact, he didn’t even plan for it to be about a card game!Yu-Gi-Oh started off as a shonen horror manga where a young boy with wild hair would become possessed by the dark spirit living in the pyramid-shaped puzzle he wore around his neck in order to punish bullies and other ne’er-do-wells in ironic ways. This dark spirit, Yami Yugi, would challenge the troublemakers to a game, and punish them for losing. Each story revolved around a different game, from a variant of air hockey on a hot grill with nitroglycerin in the puck to a D&D-like roleplaying game where everyone was a piece on the game board.Magic: The Gathering was a popular game in Japan in the mid-90s, even inspiring its own manga, so it was only a matter of time before Takahashi wrote a chapter revolving around the popular card game from America. Renamed Duel Monsters and changed enough to avoid copyright issues, it was the most popular chapter by a wide margin, so it was only a matter of time before the game got an entire story arc… and then another… and then became the focus of the series.Like sharks to blood, Bandai immediately began merchandising, releasing a rudimentary card game available through Carddass vending machines. The rules of the game were written over the cards, so you had to collect the whole set to even be able to learn how to play. But the demand for new cards quickly outstripped Bandai’s vending machine capabilities, so the license was sold to Konami, which revised the rules and released cards in booster pack format, while keeping the original Carddass vending machine size.Twenty-odd years later, Yu-Gi-Oh is virtually unrecognizable from its humble origins, both in the anime and the card game. But it’s still selling strong, still attracting players. Who can tell if it will last for another twenty?IN THE WORLD OF POKÉMONStellar Crown Pre-Release EventsSaturday, 6:30 PM, Sunday 3:00 PMCelebrate the newest Pokemon Set, Scarlet and Violet Stellar Crown at Gam3Escape's pre-release events. Written by Jim Ziegler It was an unprecedented Pokémon World Championship in Honolulu last weekend, but with the World Championship behind us, it’s time to look ahead at what the rest of the year has in store in the store. Next year’s Pokemon World Championships have already been announced, along with 2026, both taking place in California, making them once again within financial reach of sleepy little Hilo’s gaming community. In competitive reach… that’s a different story. The Pokémon World Championships have been growing steadily, even with the requirement to get a spectator badge to enter the venue, and The Pokémon Company International has taken steps to slow that growth down by placing a limit on how many players will get an invitation from each game, division, and region. By switching from a set goal to earn an invitation (for example, 600 points for TCG Masters) to a system where only the highest scoring few players will earn invites, TPCi has made not only a moving goalpost, but also an invisible one. Video Game and GO players may be even more heavily impacted as Showdown events are rolled into League Challenges and League Cups hosted in local game shops without any official prize support. These players are less likely to be satisfied with a few packs of trading cards, since they may not be players, and store owners have been reluctant to host these Premier Events because they don’t bring in the players who purchase a lot of product outside of a few snacks. As a step forward, though, new policy is to help Pokémon Professors volunteering at Regional and International Championships with travel and hotel stipends, which marks a significant step forward in support shortly after Wizards of the Coast stepped back from official recognition of Magic judges. But the real questions is: When will Ravensburger put together an official judge program? Written by Jim Ziegler Pokémon players from around the world congregate in Honolulu, Hawai’i this week for the Pokémon World Championship. Hosted at the Hawai’i Convention Center, for many trainers this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip to one of the most beautiful areas on Earth. For those of us who live here, it’s a welcome return after the 2012 Pokémon World Championship in Waikaloa Village. If you’re visiting Hawai’i for the first time, don’t spend your entire trip at the convention center and the Trainer Village in Waikīkī. Take some time to explore the local culture! Hawai’i is one of the most isolated places on Earth, which means that a lot of our local wildlife can’t be found anywhere else, and several species are federally protected. If you see a honu (green sea turtle) or a monk seal on the beach or in the bay, stay away! Disturbing these and other endangered species, like the nēnē goose, is a federal crime, and you don’t want your vacation to end in jail. Food in Hawai’i draws inspiration from around the world, but there’s a very strong Japanese influence. Fresh world-class seafood is available all around the city, but if you really want the local experience, look for a poke (pronounced poké) bowl. Raw, marinated fish over rice is a popular local dish, and oh so ono (delicious)! For the less adventurous, a loco moco is the go-to dish for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Or cool off with shave ice, a favorite local treat that may be sold in your hometown as “Hawaiian Ice,” but which pales in comparison to the original. Just a mile away from the Hawai’i Convention Center, the annual Aloha Card Show is happening at the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Collectors and vendors from around the state congregate to buy, sell, and trade cards from baseball to Yu-Gi-Oh, so you’ll be sure to find plenty of rare and vintage Pokémon cards for your collection. There’s even a PSA booth, to get your World Championship promos graded on the spot! For those who can’t make it to the main event, you can watch the best players in the world battle it out on Pokemon’s official Twitch channel, and participate in the celebration in spirit by earning a World Championship 2024 promo during League play all week at Gam3Escape. And for those who can, don’t forget to stop by the Gam3Escape booth located next to the TCG Illustration Contest Gallery! We’ll see you in Honolulu! Written by Jim Ziegler August is a busy month at your favorite game escape, with something big happening in every game under the sun! After a couple month delay, it’s finally time for the Warhammer 40K Kill Team tournament. While Warhammer 40K is usually played with large armies, Kill Team focuses on smaller groups of units, almost treating each one as a hero unit to focus on. Notably, a similar transition from armies to small groups was the inspiration for the earliest version of Dungeons & Dragons, as well as the first MOBA games, which remain popular among major league esports. This week also sees the newest Lorcana release, Shimmering Skies. With Ursula’s plans finally foiled, the Illumineers and Glimmers finally have a chance to relax and celebrate their success. But far above, the Great Illuminary is beginning to crumble. It’s up to you, along with the trusty team of Glimmers in your deck, to stop the Great Illuminary from collapsing before it’s too late!In the world of Pokémon, the World Championship in Honolulu is rapidly approaching, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have events in Hilo, as well. This Sunday marks the second Pokémon Go League Challenge, followed immediately by the Pokémon Trading Card Game League Challenge. Shrouded Fable, the mini set focused on the Loyal Three and Pecharunt also hits the shelves this Thursday, just in time to be legal at the World Championship next weekend. And let’s not forget Popplio Community Day on August 31st! Finally, the Yu-Gi-Oh Quarterly Regional Qualifier is coming up at the end of the month, so make sure your duel deck is ready to go! Whew!
