Written by Jim Ziegler In the 2024-2025 season, The Pokemon Company International changed the game for both Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Video Game Championship formats, rolling the Premier Challenges and Midseason Showdowns into League Challenges and League Cups, respectively. While this should reduce confusion for Pokémon Go and VGC players trying to get into the competitive aspects of the game, it has been met with a lot of pushback from local game stores throughout the world. If you’ve been paying attention to Gam3Escape’s calendar, you’ve probably noticed that it’s been getting more and more crowded with events spanning more than half a dozen games, from Magic to Warhammer to D&D. While we try to make sure that there’s room for everyone, there are only so many hours in the day, and players are often only available on certain days or at certain times. In order to accommodate everyone there’s often overlap between the events, like Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic tournaments happening at the same time. While the best local game stores strive to create a welcoming environment for everyone, there are always bills to pay and mouths to feed. Running these kinds of events meets both of these needs: It gives players a chance to socialize and show off their skills, and it brings them in to buy packs, snacks, sleeves, and other products to support the store. Video game tournaments, unfortunately, rarely help keep the lights on. Senior members of Hilo’s gaming community will remember Here Be Dragons, a much smaller shop in downtown Hilo, which was the place to play Magic, Magi Nation, Legend of the Five Rings, HeroClix, and other popular games of the early 2000s. Eventually the owner set up a TV and an XBOX in order to host Halo tournaments, which led to increased foot traffic into the store but, to his dismay, plummeting profits. Across the United States and Europe, LGS owners have had similar struggles with the Pokémon video games. As much as they want to host tournaments, VGC players are far less likely to purchase products in the store, as their game requirements are self contained. As a former competitive Pokémon VGC player I’m excited to bring tournaments back into the game shop, but their success depends on you, the players. As another chapter of Lorcana draws to a close, it’s time once again for the Store Championship! The first Store Championship got a lot of attention that Lorcana players didn’t expect: The Rock Star Stitch promo awarded to the top four players at every league peaked at $700 on TCGplayer, with some selling for up to $900 on eBay the weekend it was released. The game had already caught the attention of investors, leading to inflated prices and significant product shortages that made the game seem inaccessible to new and casual players, but the sudden surge in prices turned a lot of other investors’ attention to the new game. The price for the Stitch promo has been in a slow decline, but has not stabilized yet. Rampant speculation on the Ursula’s Return Set Championship promo may mean that dedicated players have another opportunity to add a key card to their collection, or sell it to fund their next build. Or perhaps speculators with ultra-tuned decks will roll into small-town LGSs to snag all of the promos and playmats to flip online. Only time will tell.On the subject of competitive Lorcana, Illumineers need to be aware that the popular Bucky – Squirrel Squeak Tutor has received a significant errata, changing nearly every aspect of the card in the interest of maintaining a fun experience for other players: Bucky now costs one more to play, loses his Ward keyword, and requires you to use Shift in order to activate his Squeak ability. This errata significantly changes Bucky’s playability and is a sign of the growing pains Ravensburger is experiencing with the massive success of the game. Hopefully this is a one-time event, and not a portent of things to come. YOUTH SUMMER DUNGEONS & DRAGONS CAMP Friday, 3:00 PM Gam3Escape's Youth Summer Dungeons & Dragons Camp is back! Written by Jim Ziegler The late 90s and early 2000s were a wild time for trading card games. Every franchise, from Star Wars down to Werewolf: The Apocalypse wanted to get in on the success of Richard Garfield’s Magic: The Gathering, with varying levels of success. The Star Wars Customizable Card Game seemed like a sure hit, but it was discontinued in 2001. Meanwhile, an out-of-nowhere Japanese title about stuffing monsters into baseballs and throwing them at each other became one of the most successful media franchises in the world. My grandmother is still upset that she invested heavily into Beanie Babies instead of Pokémon cards! Star Wars certainly seems like a large enough franchise to carry a card game, and several companies, including Wizards of the Coast, have tried to get one off the ground. Young Jedi, PocketModel, Destiny, and more versions have each hit the market and found an audience before fading into obscurity. Can the newest, Star Wars: Unlimited, break the curse? The real winners of the cardboard wars seem counterintuitive: The original, Magic: The Gathering was a likely bet, but Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh came out of nowhere. American executives had so little confidence in Pokémon that the anime was relegated to 6:00 AM timeslots, and shocked when kids started getting up early to watch it. The show was compelling enough that it wouldn't make sense not to merchandise it, as each episode served as an advertisement for a different Pokémon or accessory. The success of Yu-Gi-Oh surprised even the creator, Kazuki Takahashi, who only intended for the Duel Monsters card game (a clear reference to Magic: The Gathering) to appear a couple of times. But fans latched onto the game, prompting Bandai to hastily create a card game to be released though Carddass vending machines before later selling the rights to Konami. Most American fans were never even aware that it started as a horror manga! Now Magic, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh are the big three, while others such as Rage, Legend of the Five Rings, Hecatomb, and most recently Metazoo have faded into obscurity. Only time will tell which category Star Wars: Unlimited and Lorcana will fall into… YOUTH SUMMER GAMING CAMP Monday through Thursday, 3:00 PM Gam3Escape's Youth Summer Gaming Camp is back and it is bigger, bolder, and badder than before! Written by Jim Ziegler What better way to celebrate Independence Day than by heading down to your local independent game store? Build a new Braviary or Jeskai deck to show your red, white, and blue pride, or grab an indy game off of the shelf. You might find a new favorite! What makes a board game indy, though? In video games we think of indy studios as being small groups, often passion projects of a dozen or so developers. Many of these releases go unnoticed, but some, like Hades, Cult of the Lamb, or Untitled Goose Game are breakout hits for their unique gameplay that isn’t afraid to break away from tradition. Large game companies, like Ubisoft, Activision, and EA Games, are beholden to their shareholders. Since most of their investors are in it for profit, rather than for the love of the games, these companies tend to play it safe, releasing tried-and-true products with a history of success instead of trying new mechanics and playstyles. That’s why you’ll see a new NBA2K, Madden, and Call of Duty game every year, even though the core gameplay (and often even graphics) are unchanged from the previous installment. This concept applies to other businesses, too: You’ve noticed that Disney is making more sequels and live-action remakes these days, because those are proven intellectual properties (IPs) that are almost certain to make money, while introducing new ones carry a risk of failure, such as 2015’s Tomorrowland. Independent studios don’t have access to these big IPs, so every game they make is a financial risk. So products that stand out are more likely to be successful, which means these studios are incentivized to be creative. This leads to fantastic new games that big companies like Hasbro and Mattel would never risk publishing, such as Betrayal at The House on the Hill, Settlers of Catan, and The Red Dragon Inn. All of these games and many more are available at Gam3Escape, so why not spend the Fourth of July celebrating Independence Day by discovering a new favorite? Written by Jim Ziegler Magic: The Gathering hasn’t always been the most inclusive environment: Some early cards contained intolerant themes and iconography against specific religious and ethnic groups, which have since been added to the banned list, and the early days of the game saw art almost exclusively featuring white men or scantily-clad women whenever humans were included. But fantasy media, including games like Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, has always served as something of a refuge for people who may look like everyone around them, but feel excluded on a deeper level. Despite the testosterone-fueled tropes of barbarians and other burly men rescuing princesses and other scantily-clad damsels-in-distress, fantasy media has always been somewhat accepting of queer-coded characters. Sure, you’re more likely to find queer stereotypes attached to villains such as The Lion King’s Scar, but you can find casually gay themes all the way back to one of the oldest recorded stories, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and even L. Frank Baum’s Oz books prominently featured a boy who realized that he was actually a girl trapped in the wrong body, an early representation of trans identity that most missed by sticking to the movies. Wizards of the Coast has been actively including representation of the LGBTQ+ community for several years now, including revealing fan-favorite characters such as Chandra Nalar and Ral Zarek as bisexual and gay, respectively. A handful of prominent Wizards staff members are gay or trans, and social media would have you believe that nearly all of the successful content creators are also members of the LGBTQ+ community. This month, as part of their Pride Month celebration, Wizards of the Coast is hosting a series of Commander Pride games with a special rule: All legal commanders are treated as though they had Partner, allowing you to mix-and-match any two legendary creatures (and a handful of Planeswalkers) as your commanders. You could use this as an opportunity to make a really overpowered deck, combining two creatures with strong, synergistic effects that would otherwise exclude each other (such as Nadu, Winged Wisdom and Zada, Hedron Grinder), but why not stick to the spirit of the month and pair up two characters that you ship or would love to see together? Afterall, Pride is about love, not conflict. YOUTH SUMMER GAMING CAMP Monday through Thursday, 3:00 PM Gam3Escape's Youth Summer Gaming Camp is back and it is bigger, bolder, and badder than before! Written by Jim Ziegler The month is half over, and the Summer Gaming Camp is in full swing! It’s not too late to head down to Gam3Escape and join in the fun. Play your favorite games or learn new ones with kids from all over the island. The Youth Dungeons & Dragons Camp also starts this Friday, June 21 from 3pm to 6pm, and runs for six weeks. Those of us who grew up in rural areas know how hard it can be to meet friends who share our interest. As often as not we establish friendships based on who lives nearby, a strict necessity when the next closest person our age is miles away and our parents aren’t able to drop whatever they’re doing to drive us to their house. But Gam3Escape offers this gaming camp so that your keiki can have opportunities to make new friends and bond over shared interests, or discover new ones together. Where else can they go to trade Pokémon cards, and then turn around and play a round of blacklight miniature golf, or have fun practicing their math skills in a fast-paced game of Gaslands? Don’t let your kids waste their summer staring at a screen and losing all the social skills and academic knowledge they learned through the school year. Use this time for enrichment, to help them learn something fun! Just remember not to tell them that they’re learning something, or else it’ll stop being fun.
