Written by Jim Ziegler Who let the gods out? When we last saw Emrakul she was happily sleeping in Innistrad’s moon, no longer enjoying her time wreaking havoc on the already horrific plane of vampires and werewolves. Now, suddenly, without explanation, everyone’s favorite eldritch mother has returned from her exile to wreak havoc once again. Emrakul’s presence was already felt on Innistrad, where her proximity alone was enough to mutate humans, werewolves, and even the land itself into horrifying, tentacled abominations. Her influence no longer seems to be bound to Innistrad, though, as Modern Horizons 3 is filled with Dominarian creatures undergoing similar mutations. Watch out for Eldrazi goblins, wumpuses, and even fish to add new fuel to the Modern fire. How did Emrakul escape the moon? Perhaps she was never trapped, after all. When Jace spoke to her immediately before the seal was in place, she seemed to accept being sealed so well that one might imagine she was happy to take a break in the lunar dust. And if the only thing keeping her sealed away was her own desire to sleep, why has she awakened again? MINIATURE PAINTING WORKSHOP Sunday, 1:00 PM The popular miniature painting workshop is back! Written by Jim Ziegler General George S. Patton once said that good tactics can save even the worst strategy, but bad tactics can destroy even the best strategy. We generally use “tactics” and “strategy” pretty interchangeably, but the two words have very different, distinct meanings: Strategy is the overarching goal, while tactics is the small steps to reach that goal. Some people think that the difference lies in size, but that isn’t entirely accurate. A battle plan to weaken an enemy force before attacking is a strategy, while attacking their supply lines to cut off access to food, water, and ammunition is a tactic. Building a deck to force your opponent to draw out is a strategy, while using Maddening Cacophony with Bruvac the Grandiloquent under your control is a tactic. Warhammer is often described as a strategy game, because although outsiders might just see two armies trying to wipe each other off the face of the planet, wiping out your opponent’s entire army is only one way to win. If you lose a quarter of your army but control all of the objectives, you might still come out ahead. Compare this to games like Final Fantasy Tactics, where most levels can only be completed a single way, and you start to see key differences. So how does bad tactics destroy a great strategy? If your strategy is to hold a certain point, but you only send a few units to attack against a hoard of enemies, you’re going to lose time and time again, even if your opponent isn’t bothering to hold the objective in favor of farming your Blood Angels. You may need to create a diversion to pull them away, disrupt the formation, or just use the U.S. Army’s favorite tactic of overwhelming force. Written by Jim Ziegler Dungeons and Dragons is a social game. You build a character to interact with the other players’ own avatars, forge long-lasting friendships, save a couple of major cities, and maybe stop a demon lord from destroying the material plane. But sometimes you don’t have time for that, so you jump into a quick campaign, kick in some doors, kill a few monsters, and then, like a guest at the Mad Hatter’s tea party, it’s time to CHANGE PLACES! On Chaos RPG Day you can do exactly that, taking one character and moving from adventure to adventure, doing minor quests and saving small villages at record-breaking speed. You may even get to play some new RPGs you’ve never played before. Perhaps and experienced Storyteller wants to run a short Werewolf: the Apocalypse game, or an AI with an IQ of 6000 is willing to put you on the Jupiter Corporation Mining Ship Red Dwarf for a quick game of zero-G golf. Aside from the opportunity to meet new people and backstab them, Chaos RPG Day is also a great way to play characters you’re curious to experiment with, or that you think will work well in a low-level campaign. If you usually play martial classes like Barbarians, this is a great opportunity to dip your toes into spellcasting, or to try out a new race, or take a big risk with a class feature like Wild Magic. CHAOS RPG DAY Sunday, 1:00 PM Chaos RPG Day is here! Bring your ready-to-play 5th Edition character (level 3, Adventurers League rules). Be ready to switch tables, games, and roles as you play Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop RPGs all afternoon. Written by Jim Ziegler Freed from the Great Illuminary during the events of Rise of the Floodborn, Ursula has been gathering strength to get her revenge for the injustices inflicted upon her. But why does she feel so slighted? In the original script for Disney’s 1989 classic The Little Mermaid, Ursula was written as King Triton’s younger sister, making her Ariel’s aunt and giving her a legitimate claim to the throne, as long as Triton didn’t produce any heirs. If this sounds like a familiar story, you’re right! Walt Disney Studios would revisit the same idea five years later with Scar in the Lion King. The royal families of Disney kingdoms don’t seem to be very nice if you’re the second child: Ursula was banished, by some accounts, simply for being ugly, as if the fact that she was half octopus instead of half fish was her fault. Scar, meanwhile, goes by his nickname because his family named him Taka, Swahili for “trash.” I’m sure we’d all have a bone to pick if our parents disowned us for being born with a disability or named us after garbage. Written by Jim Ziegler Fifty years ago Gary Gygax and Dave Arneston published the very first edition of Dungeons & Dragons, which was quickly overshadowed by ripoffs such as Tunnels & Trolls, which used the same rule system but had much clearer instructions. Luckily for the budding company, TSR, “Satanic Panic” set in and accused the games of being cult recruitment tools, which only rocketed them for far more success than they had ever anticipated. Almost twenty years later, Richard Garfield, Ph.D., began work on a simply card game he envisioned being played during breaks in his own D&D sessions. In 1993 he published the game: Magic, The Gathering. Founding Wizards of the Coast to market the new game, the young company was so successful that in 1997 they bought TSR and began publishing Dungeons & Dragons. Despite owning both properties, with significant overlap in art, mechanics, and even development teams, Wizards of the Coast didn’t get around to doing a crossover between the two franchises until 2016, with the Planeshift: Zendikar supplement. This was soon followed by supplements to play D&D campaigns on the planes of Innistrad, Kaladesh, Ixalan, Dominaria, Amonkhet, Strixhaven, Theros, and the fan-favorite Ravnica. This led to some interesting situations, with races like minotaurs appearing in multiple source books with different stats, abilities, and physical descriptions. It wasn’t until 2021 that D&D crossed into Magic, with the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set, and later Battle for Baldur’s Gate. To celebrate fifty years of D&D, Gam3Escape is hosting a Battle for Baldur’s Gate Commander Draft and Commander BINGO event, where you’ll earn an extra raffle ticket for playing a D&D commander. But with eight Magic sets canonized in D&D, what’s REALLY a D&D commander? Maybey the better question is, do you think you can pass the Persuasion check to convince Drew to give you an extra ticket for your The Ur-Dragon deck? Written by Jim Ziegler Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: Twilight Masquerade is finally here to highlight everyone’s favorite Pokémon, Masquerain! Yes, this much beloved Bug-type Pokémon from Hoenn is… not in the set? Oh, well, it must be highlighting Meowscarada, the outstanding Grass-type Pokémon that evolves from… Meowscarada isn’t in the set either? Twilight Masquerade is named after Ogerpon?! Ogerpon is the terrifying ogre of myth from the Kitakami region that you can visit in The Teal Mask, but in reality she’s among the friendliest and most adorable Pokémon you’re going to encounter. She’s just really, really lonely. Thankfully you can take her home with no less than five unique versions printed in Twilight Masquerade. Ogerpon introduced a unique version of Terastallization, changing form based on which of her four masks she wore. In Twilight Masquerade, each of these masks translates to a different Ogerpon ex, so that she can fit into almost any archetype you build, at least in sealed. And while there are five different Ogerpons, there are a total of fourteen different prints, factoring in full art and illustration rares.
